About Earthquake Engineering IITR

Earthquake Engineering

The department has made significant contributions both at national as well as international level in the area of Earthquake Engineering and Earthquake Disaster Mitigation. Some of the most important contributions are (i) drawing seismic zoning map of the country,
(ii) development of Codal Provisions on Earthquake Resistant Design and Construction Practices,
(iii) manual on earthquake resistant non-engineered construction which is usually employed for common man housing,
(iv) specifying seismic parameters and earthquake resistant analysis and design of major structures in the country,
(v) established a National Network of Strong Motion Instruments in the country for recording strong motion earthquakes which provides vital data for understanding ground motion characteristics for seismic design of structures,
(vi) generated human resource in Earthquake Engineering through its Undergraduate, Post Graduate teaching; (vi) developed major testing facilities such as Shake and Shock tables for seismic qualification studies, quasi static testing lab and soil dynamic lab.

Important studies such as Seismic Microzonation of Mega Cities, Seismic Hazard and Risk, System Identification of Structures,Earthquake response and Vulnerability Study of Structures, Structure Response Control, Seismic Base isolationof Building, Inelastic Seismic Design and Innovatiove Structual systems, seismic Qualification Testing Equipment,Seismic Monitering Studies,Strong Motion Instrumentation are in progress.
